Lake Nokomis

A couple of months ago I was supposed to go and listen to an up and coming singer in downtown Minneapolis, but plans fell through. Since I was sitting at work, in Bloomington, waiting for plans to form, I was close to Lake Nokomis. After I realized that I wasn't going to be getting a call from the friend I was supposed to see the show with, I left work to find myself upon the beginnings of a beautiful sunset. I cruised up to Lake Nokomis, set up the tripod, and snapped a few photos. It was definitely one of those situations where, "when one door of opportunity closes, another door opens." I ended up with a couple of nice shots that I've been planning to post for months.

Washington Monument: Waving Flag

This was shot from the front of the National World War II Memorial. It is, of course, of the Washington Monument. It was beautiful night to be out relaxing, taking pictures, and taking in the awesome monuments. I just wished I had more time to take photos and see more monuments. Both of the two nights we got out to the monuments at around 9pm or 9:30pm and had to be back at the station by midnight to catch the final train back. But it was thousands of times better than sitting in my hotel room, doing nothing.

Washington Memorial & Wilson Memorial Arch

Photo Notes:
I thought the flag motion was pretty unique. I also like how the monument becomes a co-element versus being THE main element. Just something a little bit different.

Washington Monument: Framing Arch

WOW!!! I just realized it's been over 2 months since I lasted posted any real pictures... I guess it's due to the fact that I'm both busy and lazy. Hopefully I'll remedy that soon.

So last week I was out in Washington, D.C. for the MAPLD 2006 International Conference. I can 100% guarantee that none of my readers know anything about this, nor do they care. It's basically a bunch of electrical engineers getting together to talk about computer chips that go into space or into planes. The highlight of the week was an evening at the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum with a special presentation by Apollo 13 astronaut Fred Haise. As I put it, "There's nothing like a bunch of space geeks at a space museum!"

Nevertheless, I was able to get out and take some photos a couple of my nights there.... My D.C. shots will be put up over the next few posts.

Washington Memorial & Wilson Memorial Arch

Photo Notes:
The Washington Memorial viewed under the Wilson Memorial Arch. My coworker and I had just hopped off of the metro train at the Smithsonian station. This the first view I had of the Memorial and I liked how the arch framed it, so of course I set up the tripod and got a few shots.

The other thing I like about this photo is that usually when you are shooting you make sure there is a clear foreground, middleground, and background in the shot. Typically the foreground object is on the bottom of the picture, but here it lies on the top - the stones of the bridge.

Clearwater Beach: Rust & Algae

Ok, I know I said the last pic was going to be the last Clearwater Beach pic, but I don't have the other picture that I wanted to post with me. Ergo, you must suffer through one more beach shot. Of course this shot is quite different from the other pics and you probably wouldn't have any idea that it was Clearwater Beach had I not mentioned it...

Clearwater Beach Sunset: Spectacle

Probably the last of the Clearwater Beach Sunset Pics.

Clearwater Beach Sunset

Photo Notes:
I like that there is spectator in the foreground. He leads the viewer (or at least me) to the main focal point: the Fiery Sun. The dark, out of focus foreground also puts more emphasis on the brilliant sun.

Clearwater Beach Sunset: Fire In The Sky

Clearwater Beach Sunset

Photo Notes:
This, again, was taken at the Clearwater Beach Pier in Clearwater Beach, FL. The original picture was a landscape shot that didn't fill the frame. The left side was boring/bland, thus reducing the interest of the photo. I cropped out the center of the picture that had the most interesting composition. Typically I don't like centering main objects (the peir/people & sun), but I think it worked out well here.

Lesson Learned:
1) Fill the frame; I need a 400mm so I don't have to crop (w/ 200mm) :-P
2) Probably not the smartest thing to mangify the retina burning ability of the sun by looking through a view finder with a magnifying lens attached.

Clearwater Beach Sunset: Remnants of a Castle

I'm sure there were plenty of predictions for 06-06-06 (666), but I bet no one predicted that my video card would die. It's definitely an apocalyptic sign of the anti-Christ! Well... maybe not, but it did force me to spend $140 bucks on a "cheap, low end" graphics card. An hour, a Michelina's Chili Mac microwave dinner, and two slices of bread later, I finally got my new ATI Radeon X1300 Pro graphics card installed and the system fully up and running.

After all of that hard work, I leave you with this photo...

Clearwater Beach Sunset

Photo Notes:
This was taken at Clearwater Beach Pier in Clearwater Beach, FL. I had set up the shot to just include the sun, pier, boat, and dissolved sand castle. At the last instant before I took the shot, the little girl ran into the scene. She adds an energetic backlit human element along with an interesting shadow.

Lesson Learned:
Sometimes good shots come from preparation, patience, and vision... other times it's just plain luck.

Clearwater Beach Sunset: Three Femmes

Well I made it back from my 10 day, two destination vacation. It was great visting family in Florida. Unfortunately, I'm only able to make it down there a couple of times a year. Following the Florida stay, I had a wonderful time spending the long weekend with awesome friends while camping & climbing at Blue Mounds State Park.

While I was in Florida I got a chance to hang out at the Clearwater Beach. Let's just say that Clearwater Beach over Memorial Day weekend has a lot of eye candy... including a beautiful sunset. I will be putting up some of the sunset pics over the next few posts.

Back from NZ

Well I made it back safe and sound from my 16 day adventure in New Zealand. The trip was great for the most part. After travelling around 31 hours yesterday, needless to say, I was completely exhausted when I got home last night.

I'd like to thank Northwest for completely hosing me over and turning, what had already planned to be a long return, into and even more stressfull and tiring test of my patience. Northewest Airlines, thank you for all of the following great customer service F-ups:

1) Moving my flight up by 2 hours without contacting me or asking me if it was ok. There's nothing like standing at the service desk with a dumbfounded look on your face as you realize they pushed up your flight 2 hours, not leaving you enough time to catch your connecting flight.

2) Having machines that are not able to find me in the system using my passport or credit card. Gotta love how they say you only need a passport or credit card, only to find out that you need the confirmation number, too, if the system isn't working correctly. After travelling 15 year with Northwest and using the E-ticket kiosks MANY times, it was great to have the machines not be able to find me in the system, as they should, when I was trying to check-in for my connecting flight home after an already long travel day.

3) Telling me I missed the 45-minute check-in limit and informing me that I cannot get the on plane that they moved me up to that I missed because their machines weren't working correctly and because they only had 2 people working, both of which were too busy to help me immediately.

4) Having no one working that could possibly override the 45-minute system lockout to get me on the plane that they caused me to miss.

5) Not being able to guarantee that I will be able to make the next flight to Minneapolis from LA because I would be flying "stand-by" and the flight was already packed.

But hey, I suppose I should look on the bright side. I got to take a detour through the lovely city of Detroit and spend an extra few hours (on top of the planned 15 hours) on their wonderfully cozy 1972 POS airplanes. Oh yeah, and I hope you like the middle seat, sitting next to a lady that's blaring some crappy musical from her laptop without headphones. Excellent!

I guess the extra flight time gave me time to look back on the beauty that is New Zealand...

Climbing Wall Introduction

Whoa! So why so much ado about duck tape? For most people, Red Green aside, duck tape is a non-essential part of daily life. Duck Tape has a little bit more importance to me. Why? Well recent I finish construction of my Climbing Wall and, as you can see in the pictures, there is Duck Tape littered everywhere on it. When you have over 50 routes in such a small area, identifying them by a unique color pattern is hugely important. Ergo, I have a new love of duck tape. What else can fulfill the needs of a route setter: offer such a large array of colors, be cheap, and easily be put on and taken off?

So what exactly makes a person construct a climbing wall in their garage? It really is a combination of a few things. One, you obviously have to enjoy rock climbing. I'm the kind of person that enjoys building stuff and spending time with friends. You put those three things together and what else could be more perfect to build than a climbing wall. I'll probably start a series on how to construct, or how I constructed, the wall sometime down the road. But for now gaze in awe at its magnificence. :-P

Happy Holidays!

Well it's the holiday season again. I just finished (for the most part) all of my Christmas shopping and UPSing gifts off to my out of state relatives. I am the definition of procrastination, what can I say. But don't worry, I didn't forget about you guys. I picked us (you, the reader/photography buffs, and myself) up a couple of presents. They are both like in nature, but each serves a distinctly different function. "What are they", you ask. Well the first is the heavily back-ordered 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S VR DX Nikkor Zoom Lens and the second is the popular 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor Lens. Now I can imagine what's going through your mind right now, "Wow, but I don't even have a Nikon camera body, and I don't think he even has my address. How/why is he going to get me this present?" Well the present to you will be received in a little less direct manner than that. The thought is that I will hopefully be taking more and better pictures with these lenses, thus you will be given a larger amount of joy through my photography. I know you guys are asking, "but they are kinda pricey, are we, the readers, really worth it." The answer is, "YES!" Your happiness is priceless in my book and I will do whatever it takes to acheive it.

I wish all of my faithful readers/fans/critics/hata's a warm and safe holiday season. May your family time be full of laugher, dinners be fulfilling, and presents be all that you had hoped for.

Merry Chrismahanakwanzika, and a Happy Festivus for the rest of us!

Duluth: North Shore Style Comp Weekend

Just got back from a good weekend in Duluth. Spent most of Saturday at the North Shore Style Rock Climbing competition. It was a well put-together, well sponsored, and well attended comp. Yours truly came in third place in the men's intermediate category. Unfortunately, they only gave out prizes (for some odd reason) to the 1st place finishers of each of the 6 categories (instead of to the top 3 finishers of each). Although I didn't win a prize from my climbing skillz, I did manage to walk away the winner of a long sleeve shirt during one of the raffles. Congrats to all of the other 17 top finishers.

Saturday night was spent eating and drinking at Old Chicago's and chilling out at our hotel, the Inn on Lake Superior. I tried out the new Leinenkugels Apple Spice brew. It was pretty good, though I'd only recommend drinking it in small (12oz) quantities. It had much more of a tart apple flavor than I was expecting/hoping for.

The Inn was pretty nice. They have a small heated pool on the roof outside. That, mixed with about a -10ºF wind chill, made for many a funny frozen hair-do. I also learned a new mathematical formula:
-10ºF wind chill + cold/icy concrete roof + me in just a swimsuit + stuff in my pockets + a wonderful 102ºF heated pool = "me pulling a Chris Anderson" (Note: pulling a Chris Anderson consists of jumping into a body of water (hot tub, Lake Superior, etc.) with your cell phone still in your pocket).

Fortunately for me I realized right away that my phone was in my pocket (it started vibrating, begging for air, about 5 seconds after I jumped in). So I pulled it apart and set up on a towel by the pool deck to dry (a.k.a. freeze). After being submerged, then frozen, then dried out, my phone works like a charm *knock on wood*.

So here's my advice of the week! If you ever drench your phone, remove the phone from water ASAP, pull out the battery, and place all of its pieces into the freezer. After about an hour (or until frozen), remove the phone's components and let dry in ambient (72ºF) air over night. Then Presto!, you're phone is magically working again. This is what worked for me, so I'm sure it'll work for you. (Disclaimer*: Don't listen to me... I'm obviously an idiot who just got lucky!)
I guess you can say all's well that ends well. I leave you with a couple of pics from the beautiful, sunny, 12ºF afternoon on Sunday...

A Cold Wait...
Lone Ship

Navigating the Canal...
Ship Passing Through the Canal

*Additional note to disclaimer: Being an electrical engineer I highly recommend NOT letting your phone freeze while full of water. Why? Because water loves to expand when it freezes, causing all of your phone's nifty hi-tech components, solder joints, and LCDs to flex and crack in ways they aren't supposed to. What I would recommend is to remove your cell's battery and place all pieces into a warm, dry environment to dry. (no, not your oven)

One of the more thought out and creative costumes at the festival was this cute kitty. She had a big ball of pink yard, a tail, drawn on wiskers, cat eyes (contacts), and a cute lil cat ear hat. To be honest, she was kinda hot...

I was lucky enough to have her pose for me for a single picture...

Renaissance Festival: Costumes I

Every year, during the months of August and September, the Minnesota Renaissance Festival happens here in the Twin Cities area. I make it a priority to spend at least one day that the festival each year. I love all of the people dressed up and acting out their parts. Of course, with my love for food, it's a must that I eat a smoked turkey leg along with a variety of other delicious foods while I'm there. This is the first year that I have had the opportunity to do some photography at the festival (since I just got my D70 this last Feb). With the bright, extravagant costumes and eccentric behavior, this was a perfect opportunity for me to start working on my candid photography. Enjoy!

Rocky Lake Superior Shores: Phase I

I really do love all aspects of the North Shore of Lake Superior. The variation of rock is pretty sweet up there. One of the coolest rock displays that I recently saw up there was a cool imbedding of white quartzite into the predominantly red Keweenawan (Late Proterozoic) lava flow deposit.

On the road again...

I have that Willy Nelson song running through my head as I think of how I'll be gone every weekend this month. I'm not working a single 5 day week this month. That just means I'll have to work longer days.

Well this weekend I'll be on a climbing trip to Devil's Lake State Park with Bensbane and a bunch of other climbing friends. Too bad Pete couldn't make it; Pete's too busy dispatching cops to take care of the idiots of Northwestern Wisconsin.

Yeah... I'm still "organizing" but I need to get through about 1000 more mp3s on my hard drive before I can clean install. All in due time I guess.

Graffiti

Here are a couple of graffiti pics from the underside of a bridge in St. Paul that spans the Minnesota River. It was a lovely May afternoon for a stroll along the Minnesota River.

Getting Organized...

Life is busy. With trips, climbing, LAN parties, etc, it's hard to get myself organized. Well I've chosen to attempt to be more committed to organizing my photography. I just picked up two 160GB hard drives that I'm going to set up RAID1 (mirror) with. This space will be for my photography ONLY!!! On top of that, I'm in the process of trying to sort through pictures, mp3s, movies, and misc crap that I have on my two hard drives now. Once I'm completed with the sorting, I'm gonna give myself a fresh start with a clean install. Then the RAID will be set up. So please bear with me.

On another note, my friends' band Kynosis is playing at the Terminal Bar tonight. It's a very small venue, so that should make the show even more personal. It should be nice and cozy in there, but it'll be fun. If you can't make the show at least check out their website and download some of their music. To be honest with you though, they sound MUCH MUCH better live, so you should make all efforts to check them out in concert.

Anyways, here's another picture from my climbing trip up the North Shore to Temperance River State Park. I woke up around 5am the morning I took this shot. If you knew me at all then you'd know that's unheard of unless I stay up all night or I'm catching a flight. Anyways, the only ones awake at that time in the morning that day were me and my little Loon friend. Hope you enjoy.

I posted some of the pics from the Annual MinnesotaClimbing.com Blue Mounds Climbing Gathering to the gallery. I didn't get very many pictures. Though most of the days were full of rain, we did get in some good climbing. I'm not gonna write up a trip report since most of my time was consumed with either sleeping, game playing, climbing, shelter creation, or eating. Memorial Day Weekend on the North Shore

For Memorial Day Weekend I was invited to go camping at Temperance River State Park. I was initially a little held back because of the forcasted rain in that area. Finally, I was convinced to go. All I can say is "THANK YOU!" "THANK YOU!" "THANK YOU!" to you guys for dragging me along (you know who you are). It ended up being a BEAUTIFUL weekend, from the drive up on Saturday to the late Monday afternoon climbing on Shovel Point. Of course, hundreds of pictures were taken; on the scale of 700+. I will be out of town this weekend, too, so it'll take me a little bit to go through the northshore pics and pick out the 50 or so I like that I will post. Anyways, here's a handful of pics from the night we arrived. I hope you enjoy them. Peace.

Thanks to all of yall that showed up for the BBQ. It was a great time had by all. I put some of the pics from the BBQ into the gallery. It is posted under the "Friends" section, but to view it you must be given permission to see the folder. To get permission, you need to register and then shoot me an email at comments@aeon3.com so I can add you to the list to view the folder. I added my favorite picture from the party here for the general publics viewing pleasure. Hopefully the "model" doesn't get too mad at me for putting it up. Peace.

Devil's Tower: Made it back in one piece!

Well I'm back from "The Tower". The climbing was great and the people were awesome. Can't wait to get back there to climb and visit Frank again. Hopefully I'll be able to set aside some time to put together a trip report soon and put pics into the gallery. In the mean time, here are a few pics from the Tower. Peace.

Kynosis: Great Band

Last night I checked out my friends' band Kynosis. They were INCREDIBLE! I highly recommend going to their shows. They have an awesome, unique sound - a great mix of guitar, drums, keyboard, and vocals. Check the pics below; more in the gallery.

Tree on the Beach in Jamaica.jpg

So, last night I was organizing some more of my 1100
pictures that I took during my week in Jamaica. I
saw one of my favorite pics and decided I needed
to post it. Here's a teaser of the pics to come.
