Climbing Wall Introduction

Whoa! So why so much ado about duck tape? For most people, Red Green aside, duck tape is a non-essential part of daily life. Duck Tape has a little bit more importance to me. Why? Well recent I finish construction of my Climbing Wall and, as you can see in the pictures, there is Duck Tape littered everywhere on it. When you have over 50 routes in such a small area, identifying them by a unique color pattern is hugely important. Ergo, I have a new love of duck tape. What else can fulfill the needs of a route setter: offer such a large array of colors, be cheap, and easily be put on and taken off?

So what exactly makes a person construct a climbing wall in their garage? It really is a combination of a few things. One, you obviously have to enjoy rock climbing. I'm the kind of person that enjoys building stuff and spending time with friends. You put those three things together and what else could be more perfect to build than a climbing wall. I'll probably start a series on how to construct, or how I constructed, the wall sometime down the road. But for now gaze in awe at its magnificence. :-P

My Duck Tape Colors

Ok, after hitting up three Michaels in the southern Twin Cities metro area, here's what I got for colors (check the pic). The grey and Hot Pink (aka Funky Flamingo) I already had (thanks katie for the pink) before I started my duck tape quest. Now the only colors I need are atomic/fluorescent yellow and the "natural colors" (beige, brown, brown realtree camo, & green realtree camo).

Rules for the "N-word"

Though I've always found the intricacies and relationships of people from a social welfare and political standpoint interesting, I rarely get passionate about social welfare or political discussions. Those two topics are something I never intended to put up on my website, so I had some internal debate before I added the Social/Political topic to my categories list. Well... what's done is done.

The reason I added the category is because I came across this great article by Vincent Williams, a black social/political columnist. The article, entitled The N-Word, dives as little into the social impact of the word from a literary perspective. It concludes with his "Official 'Nigger' Usage Rules":

"Rule No. 1: White people can not use the word under any circumstances. Quoting Mark Twain—who I decided to give a pass, because “Nigger Jim” is the hero of Huckleberry Finn—or, say, Richard Wright is an acceptable exception. Quoting Li’l Flip or Mike Jones is not. Yes, dude, I know it’s totally racist that you can’t recite 50’s latest magnum opus about getting bitches, getting money, getting shot, and the many, many other fine ways he’s Uplifting the Race. But I lost my land, my language, my god, and my mind, and, in return, you can’t sing the hook to “Gold Digger.” You got the better part of the deal.

Rule No. 2: The word should never be used as a synonym for black people.

Rule No. 3: “Nigga” is still the word “nigger,” and all other rules apply to it.

Rule No. 4: If you must use the term “the N-word,” understand you sound ridiculous.

Rule No. 5: Use of the word for satirical, ironic, or commentary purposes is acceptable if it doesn’t break one of the previous rules. But you better have a point."

Duck Tape History & Color Wheel

I guess you learn something new every day. This time it's about Duck Tape. According to Michaels, "duct tape was first created and manufactured in 1942 to keep moisture out of ammunition cases in World War II. Because it used cotton duck fabric, which was waterproof, people referred to the tape as 'Duck Tape'." Wow, who knew?

The oh-so-famous duck tape not only comes in grey, but it comes in a whole variety of colors. A peek at the Duck Tape University reveals that the colors range from the normal colors (royal blue, white, green, yellow) to the exotic (funky flamingo [hot pink], Island Green [Fluorescent Green], and blaze orange). Michaels, here I come!! I want one of each color to use for marking routes on my climbing wall!

Happy New Year!!

Well, I made it home at 4:30am this morning after partying hard for New Years. Another year has come and gone. I am yet to come up with a New Year's resolution. May it be that I'm perfect and just don't need any resolutions?? HAHAHA, yeah... most definitely NOT. I think it's more that I'm lazy and just haven't put in much effort to thinking about it. Plus I know that I'll forget about it after a week anyways, so why waste the time. I must say it is really fun to look back on all of the great times I had this past year. I also get stoked thinking about all of the potential for this coming year. Anyways, I'll probably write up a nice "2005 Year in Review" post sometime this week. Anyways, I hope you all had a safe and happy New Years weekend.

Happy 2006!!
